Kleist and I delve into the spatial life stories of Somali migrant youth who have lived across multiple countries and continents. Born to refugee parents in Europe or North America, these young individuals are shaped by their families’ pursuit of security, cultural and religious values, and access to high-quality education—factors that often lead them beyond traditional Western destinations and challenge conventional hierarchies of settlement. In the context of their hypermobile lives, the line between forced and voluntary migration becomes increasingly blurred. Drawing on ethnographic research in Türkiye, we explore how these youths make sense of their past, present, and imagined futures. We show how storytelling becomes a vital tool for navigating identity, illuminating both the complexities and possibilities of hypermobility.
